The National Registry Invites Sponsors to Participate in the CPE Standards Exposure Draft Review
On September 17, 2025, NASBA and the AICPA jointly released an exposure draft of proposed revisions to the Statement on Standards for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Programs (Standards). These proposed updates are intended to ensure the Standards continue to evolve alongside innovations in learning design, technology and delivery—while maintaining the integrity and quality of CPE programs across the profession.
As a valued National Registry Sponsor, your feedback is an essential part of this process. The proposed revisions aim to modernize the structure, clarify expectations, and better align the Standards with current learning practices. Highlights of the proposed updates include:
- Restructuring the Standards from the current “Articles” format into a more intuitive section layout, improving clarity and usability for sponsors and reviewers.
- Introduction of a ‘Seven Principles Framework’ to guide the overarching intent and application of all Standards.
- Simplified delivery method classifications, making it easier to determine applicable requirements for various program types.
- Updated guidance for QAS™ self-study programs, shifting toward a more principles-based approach to feedback on review questions—allowing flexibility while maintaining instructional integrity.
- Revised CPE program measurement standards that introduce smaller initial credit increments, integrate adaptive learning methodologies, and permit the use of actual completion times when technology supports it.
Sponsors are encouraged to review the exposure draft and redlined summary of proposed changes and submit comments by December 16, 2025.
Feedback may be provided through the online comment submission form.
Your participation plays a vital role in shaping the future of continuing professional education. NASBA and the AICPA appreciate your engagement and continued commitment to advancing learning excellence across the profession.
