Self-Employment Tax

Aug 24, 2018 by: Mark Bliss Canopy Tax

Starting a new business is the ultimate American dream. And why not? Who doesn’t love the fantasy of coming up with a killer idea that you know people will pay for, quitting your job (with or without a dramatic bridge-burning exit a’ la “Jerry McGuire”) and start raking in the cash? From 2014 to 2016 The Bureau of Labor Statistics showed an increase of nearly 150,000 self-employed individuals to 8,751,000.

With that many entrepreneurs striking out on their own, tax professionals are here to help guide these taxpayers through the sometimes-difficult transition from W2 to 1099.  As exciting as a new business is, the tax implications are often ignored until after the fact which can trigger financial stress and love-letters from the IRS. This basic course offers a plan of action to follow to get your clients started on the right foot and building value into your services.
